The exhibition « Present Time » will unveil a new collection of recent paintings by the artist whose work tackles the concept of immediate temporality. Within this, the density of the works, their simple and direct message, capture the joy experienced during their execution, the joy of the present moment, of the lived moment, of the observed moment.
Ben Arpea evolves in the world of color and sensory perception. The softness of his works elicits strong emotion in the viewer's imagination. On his canvases, clumps of color, hermetic in their thickness, punctuate the sky, the sea, space. The essence of a place, of a moment, can be read in them. There are no characters in his paintings. Human presence is suggested through a bouquet of flowers, a bowl of fruit, a glass of wine. It is the world he admires, the physical and sensual beauty of the Earth composed of sea, mountains, sunsets, trees, and charming interiors. His paintings are joyful, minimalist. They offer a simple declaration about a present moment, mixing wonder, innocence, and authenticity.
The artist thus proposes a moment of meditation on the meaning of perception and on the relationship between Nature and Art. Ben Arpéa treats his canvas like a sheet of paper, laid flat on a table. He places masses of bright and shiny colored paints on it, which he manipulates, sometimes with a brush, sometimes with a knife to work with a thick, irregular paste, with more or less color or material. As Etel Adnan said: « Just because painting is visual does not mean it is always comprehensible ». Only artists allow us to see as they do.
